WEEE National Working Party

Background
 
The National Working Group (WEEE) was formed in November 2003 and is a nationally coordinated group comprising procurement and environmental expertise drawn from members of all six regional purchasing consortia, plus the Research Council. 
 
The group was set up to address the procurement and environmental management issues emanating from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the Restriction in the use of Hazardous Substances (ROHS) Directive, which will both become law in the UK in 2006.
 
The aim of the WEEE Directive is to minimise the impacts of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment during their life times and when they become waste. It applies to a huge spectrum of products.  The RoHS Directive will ban the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of certain substances. RoHS takes its scope broadly from the WEEE Directive.  
 
Amongst the NWG’s terms of reference are that it should provide advice and guidance for the HE sector on WEEE/ROHS related issues and act as a focal point for supplier interaction.
 
Guidance
The WEEE Sub-Group's main activities to date have been to develop guidance for sector colleagues on disposal of equipment pre-WEEE legislation being applied and guidance on various elements of the tendering process. 
 
There are a number of web-sites that provide further information, such as the BERR(formally Dti site) site or let's recycle sites.
